 Dogs Intelligence

Newset writes "
TORONTO — A presentation on "How Dogs Think" drew a crowd Saturday as a psychologist, canine researcher and author of a 2004 book by the same name told the American Psychological Association that the newest research strategy for understanding dogs is to use tests meant for very young children.

"One of the most recent breakthroughs is that people began to use tests which were originally designed for young humans — for pre-linguistic or limited-linguistic humans — to see whether dogs had certain capacities. "And that allows you then to do a whole bunch of things, not only to determine whether a dog has a certain thinking skill but to place him in terms of where would you be in terms of human beings, as well as in terms of other animals," says Stanley Coren, an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia. He's the researcher who already found that the mental abilities of dogs are close to those of a human child between 2 and 2½ years old.Coren's presentation included a review of numerous studies that show how dogs are more like humans than previously thought. He says dogs can learn about 165 words, including signals; they can count up to four or five and have a basic understanding of arithmetic. Also, he says, dogs can intentionally deceive other dogs and people to get treats they want.

Previous research conducted by Coren and others has shown that different kinds of dogs have different levels of intelligence. A past study Coren did set out which breeds have the smarts.Based on data from 208 dog obedience judges around the USA and Canada, Coren says that the most intelligent breed is the border collie, with poodles ranked second, followed by German shepherds and then golden retrievers and dobermans. He ranked the breeds and calls the top 20% of dogs, by intelligence, the "super dogs." At the bottom of the list are the hounds, with the Afghan hound ranking last of more than 100 breeds.Coren, who lives in Vancouver, has written several books on dog behavior. He also trains dogs and has two dogs — a beagle named Darby and a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever named Dancer.

Project Status Report FOBDP Mar 09'

Newset writes "

The Month of March was a work in progress month. The Fund Raising committee chaired by Margie Sollish finished the Memorial Paver Project, thanks to the efforts of Jennifer Megliore. Jennifer presented the finished process and flyers for distribution at the Board meeting 3/12. Approval to proceed was granted and each board member received a Kit of promotional information – Great work Jennifer.

Also at the board meeting the feedbacks for Memorandum of Agreement – MOA for the use of the Dog Park space with the Town of Bluffton was reviewed and approved by those attending.

Charlotte has added the resolution to the Board that the ‘three strikes your out’ rule be added in that if a board a member misses more than three consecutive meetings without a show of cause they will be relegated to committee member status and a new board member appointed.

March 13, a meeting with Charlotte Wamser – Pres, Tim Bennett – Asstn. Town Mgr, and ET was conducted to review the feedbacks to the proposed MOA. Mr. Bennett has been very helpful to us in the processes we must go through. He has reminded us that the FOBDP will have to shoulder the construction and maintenance of the park as the funding is not there in the Town’s budget for the park. The feedbacks are being circulated to all affected Town departments for review and input. Another meeting will be scheduled after all the input is culled together in a consolidated revised MOA agreement.

Charlotte met with the FARM HOA quarterly meeting to present the current status for the Dog Park and answer questions on 2/10.

ET met with the Town of HHI Parks and Recreation Committee on 2/12 to review the FOBDP plans and designs. He also presented a quality report for the Chaplin Dog Park with recommendations for improved signage and infrastructure improvements, they seemed to appreciate that the FOBDP appreciates and is interested in the wellbeing of their park.

The Town of Bluffton was contacted 3/27 by Keowee Key a private residential community of about 1,400 homes and 2,500 inhabitants in the foothills of Western SC, Oconee County for information about the planned FOBDP. ET held a call with them and has offered to provide an information transfer meeting with them. He will stop over on 4/27-28 at Devils Fork State Park on his way to Louisville KY -Derby Festivities and tour the proposed site and review the FOBDP design and status with the interested POA board members.

ET also has an invite from the Louisville Dog Parks Association to vist their dog parks and meet with them to exchange ideas - www.louisvilledogs.com

Planning for April will be to begin the TGIF days in Bluffton and a FOBDP table at the event, Publicizing the Memorial Paver program. ET and Chris Record the town planner are to begin the pre-PUD meetings for the park after the Town has round robin’d all the design ideas.

Project Status Report FOBDP Feb 09'

Newset writes "Currently we are very active in the planning for the dog park as follows:

Fundraising Committee held Feb 24 review, our advisor Dr Arthur Segal , Rabbi, has agreed to advise the organization on activities to get to the goal of $35,000 for the park to begin construction.

Meetings with the Town of Bluffton are progressing. We have another planned review of the MOA/Permit the second week of March.

Our Budget estimates for the park are getting more riggor and substance, still within the $35K goal.

We are also engaging agencies to advise for the best design for stormwater runoff to insure our compliance with DHEC standards and the Town of Bluffton

We have met several tims with the FARM community and its board to review the design and update them on our progress. We hope to have a meeting with Pine Ridge development POA in March also to keep our local neighborhoods in the loop.

A meeting was held with Wood + Partners the architects that the county utilizes for their parks designs to review our designs that Danny Fogel has tirelessly provided, thank you Danny!

ET Morrison, Project Manager FOBDP"
